Abstract

Appetite and energy balance have been tried to be elucidated through research for many years. The melanocortin system in the brain has an important role in maintaining this balance. It provides its functions through different mechanisms in the body. These mechanisms; It is associated with hormones, dopamine, AMPK, exercise, diet, immunoglobulins and lipocalin-2. Disorders in the functioning of the melanocortin system cause many metabolic syndromes, especially childhood obesity. Developing treatment methods for these conditions caused by diet or genetic variations may be important for many diseases. In this review, the working principles of the melanocortin system in appetite and energy balance and its relationships with nutrients were examined.
